Craig Mackinlay MP, used a speech yesterday on the floor of the House of Commons to call for a permanent settlement for the victims of the contaminated blood scandal. Craig Mackinlay has been consistently campaigning on this issue since being elected in May.
Thousands of people were infected with Hepatitis C and HIV through NHS blood products in the 1970s and 80s. Speaking in the debate Craig raised the specific cases of his constituents Steve Dymond and Lee Stay, both of whom were, through no fault of their own, infected with contaminated blood.
Craig Mackinlay also welcomed the Government’s consultation to alter the current system of financial support, which victims say is unsuitable and leaves them feeling belittled. In the debate Craig acknowledged that whilst money could never bring back what victims have lost, it is important that the Government do what it can to bring dignity to the shortened lives of many of those who suffer.
Speaking after the event Craig Mackinlay said, “I have been campaigning to see justice for victims like my constituent’s Steve and Lee. They deserve better and I will continue to fight for them.”
Lee Stay thanked Craig Mackinaly for attending the debate and for raising his specific case. Commenting after the debate Lee Stay said that he hopes the Contaminated Blood debate brings about a much better settlement then currently being offered to those affected.
